NEWS For Immediate Release August 7, 1998 Contact: Steven Hofmann 312-280-4389 shofmann@ala.org AASL holds first annual Information Power Training Institute The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) has developed an implementation plan for the new national program guidelines and student information literacy standards contained in Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning. The plan, *Information Power: Because Student Achievement IS the Bottom Line,* has more than 30 specific, measurable, active, relevant and timed objectives for AASL and its state affiliate partners. A separate state planning guide is also being developed. As part of this implementation plan, AASL held its first annual Information Power Training Institute July 31-August 4, 1998, at Hickory Ridge Conference Center in Lisle, Illinois. The purpose of this *trainers of trainers* institute was to prepare in-state specialists in implementation planning. 23 individuals from 13 states participated in the intensive four-day training. States represented in this initial training included Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and South Carolina. The five trainers were: Pat Cavill, marketing consultant; Sharon Coatney, AASL president; Carolyn Giambra, AASL Implementation Task Force chair; Ken Haycock, AASL past-president; and Dawn Vaughn, staff development specialist. This institute included examination of the content of Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning, introduction to the research base on adult learners and change management, and training in advocacy and effective collaboration with decision-makers. It also provided opportunities to address unique situations and assistance with state planning approaches. The mission of the American Association of School Librarians, a division of the American Library Association, is to advocate excellence, facilitate change, and develop leaders in the school library media field. AASL works to ensure that all members of the school library media field collaborate to provide leadership in the total education program; participate as active partners in the teaching/learning process; connect learners with ideas and information; and prepare students for life-long learning, informed decision-making, a love of reading, and the use of information technologies. ##### Steven Hofmann Coordinator of Communications American Association of School Librarians a division of the American Library Association 50 E.
