I wrote: I am a K-4 Media Specialist with K-8 experience and have been out
of the 6-12 loop three years. My husband teaches children in a school that
is the last resort before suspension and jail. He has 12 students grades
6-12 and
needs recommendations of GOOD books to read. His intention is to fill every
non-instructional moment with good reading and would appreciate any
suggestions you have for titles. His principal is very supportive because
many of these kids have never taken the time to read and are HIGH RISK for
our society. I appreciate any and all help you can provide. TIA.

**Well, here are some of the great suggestions (names withheld per
request). He started off with Hatchet and the kids are now reading Poe's
short stories, poetry, and novels. Thanks.

The suggestion I'm sending isn't from my
work, but from my 6th grade daughter. It's Goognight Gracie, by Julie R.
Deaver. She loves this book like no other. It's the story of grieving that
a young girl does when her best friend, a guy, is killed by a drunk driver.
It was a ALA 1988 Best Book for YAs and a 1988 ALA recommended book for
reluctant readers.

Sparrow Hawk Red_ by Ben Mikaelsen and _The Fear Place_ by Phyllis
Reynolds Naylor are both good books for boys. They were California
Young Reader Medal nominees (sp?) last year

Watson's go to Birmingham, 1963
The Giver

I would also recommend Gary Soto's Buried Onions, or Petty Crimes (or
other of his works.)
There's a great short story collection called "12 Shots" where all the
stories are about guns in one way or another (and it is NOT pro-gun,
basically). Short story collections can really keep things moving,
because they provide so much variety.

I WOULD LIKE TO SUGGEST "SLEEPERS" BY LORENZO CARCATERRA. IT WOULD
DEFINITELY DETER ANY CHILDREN I KNOW FROM GETTING INTO TROUBLE WITH THE
LAW. THE BOOK AND MOVIE SCARED ME TO DEATH.

Diane, please look at a web site my students and I have made and see if
your husband can find some good books for his students. The Reading
Corner http://www.carr.lib.md.us/read
