If you ask a student to read a page of a book and s/he comes across a word that is not in her/his vocabulary, then 1 finger is raised. If by the time the student is done with the page all five fingers (4 and a thumb, actually) are raised, then the book is considered too hard. It is a good way for a student to self evaluate.
