The evening hours are (imho) to serve the students first
and foremost. Our library is, as you say, desigend to support
their curricular needs while the public library is not. The
point is to give access to the students at additional and
alternative times.

The added benefit is that parents and community members
who are paying the bill for a costly facility that is
traditionally only open a part of the year... access.
I don't see parents and community members clamoring
for the books on our shelves but looking to have
some guided access to online resources, to see this
thing called the internet, etc. They also want to know
things such as where to find more information about new
state standards and benchmarks, etc. We are especially
equipped to provide them that kind of support. The other benefit
there is in the relationships we can establish with
parents and community members when such opportunities
are afforded.

Time and money are issues of course. But in an ideal
world...
