Re the question on Internet rsources for history of educaiton:

Portions of "120 years of American Education - A Statistical Portrait" are
online at the NCES site. Go to: http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/adform.htm
To search NCES - type in "120 years" in the title line and you'll come to a
description of the document called "120 years of American Education: A
Statistical Portrait" along with some full-text portions

There is also some very minimal information at:
http://smitcnt.idbsu.edu/pit/FOCUS/winter/evolve.html
"The Evolving Role of America's Public Schools"

Hope this helps somewhat. Jan
