Dear LM_Netters, Here are the links and advice that I received about writing web pages. Thanks to all that took the time to share the very helpful informatin! Carol wrote: In terms of designing your web site, as a general rule of thumb - Don't do anything to compromise the safety of the children. We teach children all the time what to do and what not to do when approached by strangers, and all the other safety rules to follow when in various situations, that it seems that we would be compromising their safety by posting photos on the web. One never knows who's lurking. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has a web site and publishes rules for children's conduct when using the Internet. It includes guidelines for parents on how they can assist in reducing the risk to children, and I think that those involved in designing a school web site need to be aware of certain safety issues. One of the brochures available on the web that everyone needs to know about is entitled "Child Safety on the Information Highway." The URL is http://www.missingkids.com/ Also, Bellingham Public Schools is an example of a school systems that has put a lot of effort into the design and planning of their web site. They post student projects - using First Name only. They also have a "parent permission form" "Internet policies" and rules for "web publishing" and much more. The URL for their web page is http://www.bham.wednet.edu/ Also, if you need resources for web page design, check out my homepage at http://www.ohionet.org/~carol for some other tips. ---------------------------------- Marsha wrote: I have a presentation I did for a class on the web at http://www.d.umn.edu/~mfilipia. The info there might be of use. -------------- Cathy wrote: Yesterday at our County Technology meeting, I brought up the issue of getting parents permission before pictures are put on a school web site after seeing several messages on this listserv. Elizabeth Wallace who is a SchoolNet Faculty member informed us that from a legal standpoint we should not put any pictures on our website unless we have parental permission. It was brought up what if there are no names with pictures and the response was still the same. In addition, she told us that we must have written permission for all links to other sites that we want to recommend to others. -------------------- Geoffrey wrote: I am sending you the Los Angeles Unified School District's home page.
