The first tip comes from Sandi Flowers (sflow@usaor.net), a reading teacher from Springdale High School, Springdale, Pa. "My students will be designing posters =EBadvertising=ED their favorite book= s and why other people should read them. They will be posted in our hall. I have polled our faculty and will post a list of comments about reading and the names of books that have changed their lives. We will also have a list of celebrities' favorite books. I want to send my students the message that successful people are readers." The second tip comes from Pam Kunselman (pamk@greenapple.com) a second grade teacher at Amanda Elementary in Amanda, Ohio. "We will be participating in Read Across America by encouraged students to dress up as Seuss characters. To go along with the theme, we were able to persuade our lunchroom staff to serve green eggs and ham on March 2. We were not taken seriously at first. The cooks, after some consideration, agreed to help us celebrate. To involve the community, the local librarian will be presenting a retelling of =EBThe Cat in the Hat=ED, using props and volunteers from the audience. Parents, principal, and community members will be invited into my second grade classroom throughout the day. Our school is excited!" The third tip comes from Sonja Yefsky (Sonniesky@aol.com) a Reading Specialist at Central Middle School in Parsippany, NJ. "Each year in our middle school we have held Drop Everything And Read (DEAR WEEK). It has become an annual tradition eagerly awaited by students and staff alike. Since NEA is sponsoring READ ACROSS AMERICA on March 2, we are using the day to hold a =EBBOOK SWAP=ED for students and staff. Students an= d staff will be bringing in books that are gently used and age appropriate to be swapped during one period of our school day. The grade level which brings in the most books, earns 2 for l coupons. Participants can select as many books as they have coupons, and any additional books are donated to an appropriate needy facility." ------------------- READ ACROSS AMERICA On the morning of March 2 (Read Across America day), major league baseball players including Cal Ripken and Alex Rodriguez will we online encouraging kids to read.
