Dear Group,

The following is a list of web sites I compiled about industrialization
in late 19th America.  A more detailed list of web sites on that period
can be found in my article, "The Gilded Age in America," Ohio Media
Spectrum, Fall 1997.

1850-1890. This Illinois State Museum site includes maps, timelines,
information about homes, and the impact of railroads. It also includes
lesson plans.  It is an excellent site.

1890-1920.  This is the continuation of the Illinois State Museum site.
It includes detailed information about industrial development of the
State.

http://hfm.umd.umich.edu/histories/edison/tae.html- Thomas Edison.  This
site, developed by the Henry Ford Museum, details Thomas Edison's life
and inventions

http://hfm.umd.umich.edu/histories/hf/henry.html--Life of Henry Ford.
This Henry Ford Museum site describes Henry Ford's life, inventions, and
his impact on America.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/amex/carnegie/--Life and Times of Andrew
Carnegie. This Public Broadcasting Service site is  based on PBS's
American Experience series. It includes a teacher's guide and suggested
readings.

Graham Bell's Path to the Telephone.  This site contains very detailed
technical information, and drawings.  It would be most appropriate for
high school students.

Inventor of the Week Archives.  This excellent site contains
biographical material on approximately 60 inventors. It is arranged in
alphabetical order.

of the Telephone and its Impact on American life.  This excellent Public
Broadcasting Service site is based on the American Experience series.
It includes a  teacher's guide and suggested readings.

Building of the First Subway, 1900-1904, in New York City.  This is
another part of the Public Broadcasting Service site based on the
American Experience series.  It discusses historical and technical
background of the subway.  It also includes a teacher's guide and
suggested readings.

Timeline.  This is another part of the Public Broadcasting Service site
based on the American Experience series. The timeline  includes dates
and information about the different inventions.  A teacher's guide and
suggested readings are included.

http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/detroit/dethome.html--Collection of 25,000
photographs from 1890-1920 from the Detroit Publishing Company.  This
site is part of the Library of Congress's outstanding online American
Memory Collection.  The subjects of the photographs include cities,
towns, industry, transportation and scenic views.

Resources about the Detroit Publishing Co.  The site includes classroom
uses of the Detroit Publishing Company site , related links, historical
background and suggested readings.

Factory: The Westinghouse Works, 1904.  This site is part of the Library
of Congress' American Memory Collection.
