Heidi, there is a lot to be said for chatting. The John Marsden
coversation probably wouldn't have come up in the ordinary list because
it was sparked by the chance appearance of a librarian from Australia.
One thing led to another (many not library-related, even) and this
little gem popped out. Because of the listserv rules, all the general
"chitchat" that eventually got to Marsden wouldn't have happened in
public anyway. When chats are on specific, anticipated topics, they will
be logged, edited and posted on the LM_NET website for all to see - AT
YOUR OWN CONVENIENCE. So there is really no time problem for you to get
the information you desire, and you don't have to while away many hours
to get the meat of a very floaty conversation.

The nice thing about chat is that those of us who are more social (this
isn't a judgement thing, just a personality difference) can interact in
real time, and those who are more time-pressed or concrete-sequential
can still get information in our own preferred way. Many learning
styles, many approaches. We advocate that for our students, why not for
ourselves?
