target: automation and terminals

I am confused!  I asked my tech guy if I could use the 386 computers =
that they are going to get rid of.  He told me, "No, they don't have a =
hard drive."  We are planning on using dumb terminals and my =
understanding was that dumb terminals don't have hard drives either??? =
Why wouldn't  the 386's work.

Thanks for helping me out of this total confusion!
