JOB:  MIDDLE SCHOOL LIBRARIAN - beginning with 98-99 school year
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE a master's degree in library science from
an ALA-accredited program and two year’s experience in the field.
(This is to satisfy British work permit requirements.)
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE collaboration with teachers in grades 5 - 8
for integration of library resources into the curriculum, instruction
to classes and individual students in the use of library resources, and
other standard librarian duties.  Some cataloguing skills required.

The Middle School/High School Library has 17Pcs and 4 Macs for student
use.  All computers access the Card Catalog (Unison), the Internet,
E-Mail, and a CD-Server which houses SIRS, NewsBank, Wilson Disc, EMAS,
The Economist and The Times (London.)  The library houses 40000+
volumes and subscribes to over 200 periodicals.  There is also an
extensive video collection.  There are facilities for viewing videos,
laser discs, and satellite tv.  The annual library budget is 60,000
pounds British Sterling.   Between 800 - 900 students use the library
daily.  The library uses flexible scheduling.

The Library Staff is comprised of a high school librarian, middle
school librarian, part-time librarian and media librarian.  There are
four support staff positions:  library secretary, circulation manager,
periodicals manager and media technician.

The School year runs from mid-August to mid-June.   (Vacation includes
2 weeks at Christmas, 1 week in February, 2 weeks at Easter and
assorted Bank Holidays.)  Salary dependent upon experience but ranges
from 20,000 to 28,000 Pound Sterling for the first two years of
employment at ASL.  (An American employee is not liable for UK income
tax the first two years of employment.  If an employee stays beyond two
years, the school will pay all back taxes.  The salary then jumps to
reflect tax paying status)

The American School in London (ASL) is a nonprofit, independent school
for students in pre-kindergarten through Grade 12, offering the
continuity of an American curriculum.  ASL is organized into three
School divisions, the Lower School, the Middle School and the High
School.  There are 1250 students in the school, 800 of which are in
grades 5 - 12.  The Middle and High School share a library facility.
The School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges
and Schools and by the European Council of International Schools and is
a member of the National Association of Independent Schools and the
Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.
