Good points ... but another personal (NON-teacher) view ...

I don't suppose all would approve of much of my reading of choice when I
was young, which included garishly illustrated science fiction/fantasy
magazines and the magnificent pulp-fiction "Conan" tales by Robert E.
Howard ... but they made (and still make) a nice contribution to the whole
intellectual package ... yes, even Conan. These days, most of my reading
seems to be books on TCP/IP, the computer industry, and programming
languages ... but my old science fiction books are still in the next room
... and the only TV shows I watch regularly now are "Hercules: The
Legendary Journeys" and "Xena: Warrior Princess."

Who could have IMAGINED then what would be considered classics (at least of
their genre) a generation or two later? (I don't suppose Goosebumps books
are in any danger of that ... but who knows ...) Here's a vote for
escapist fluff ... at least in moderation.
