TECH: jpeg vs gif

Dear Group,
I maintain my school's homepage and recently a parent suggested I use
jpeg photos instead of gif photos to speed up loading of the page.  I
appreciate the suggestion, but I don't know if that is an option for
me.  I use PageMill and work on a MAC platform.  My parent works on an
IBM.  We don't "understand" each other.  Is this do-able? Can anyone
explain the process to me...I'm willing to try.  Thanks.
