Today the six librarians in my district (1 hs, 1 mid, 4 elem) have received word that we have $30000 (hourly rate $22.00) to spend in keeping our libraries open beyond school hours for access to Internet, reference services, and circulation. Money must be spent before July 1st. We have carte blanche as to whether we would like to have our libraries open before school, afterschool, in the evening, Saturday, or summer (up to June 30th). Money can also be spent to hire custodian/security and professional assistance (other teachers). We plan to quickly survey parents and children for input as to when they would most likely use the library but we are being pressed to come up with a plan within a week. Question: I would greatly appreciate input from other librarians who currently have or had extended hours in their libraries for their students. What has worked, what has not? What were your hours? Any other advice you might have for the uninitiated? TIA If there is interest in extended hours, I will post a hit.
