Target: Source of a story for a teacher

Hi, LM_Netters!

        One of my teachers is looking for the source of an inspirational
story he heard in a class many years ago.  He thinks it may have been in
READERS DIGEST originally.  He has looked through years of them to no
avail.

        The story is about a women who goes to the beach to get away
from stress.  There she meets a young girl and they begin talking with
each other each day.  One day the woman is in a bad mood and snaps at
the little girl when the child greets her.  After that, she does not see
the child again.  After a few weeks, the woman goes to the little girl's
home and is told how much the girl had enjoyed the beach visits before
she died of leukemia.

        The story sounded very familar to me, but I don't remember where
I read it.  Can any of you help me?  It would be very much appreciated
by the teacher and myself.  TIA!
