Re Ken's suggestions for commercial phone callers >--simply set the phone down on the desk ... and ignore it until they hang up >(you can precede this with "excuse me a moment" first, if you wish) This has proved useful with teachers as well even if by accident. I have a particular Science teacher who never comes near the library but regularly phones to say a student will be down to pick up a required video. One day she phoned during recess and I put the phone down and went and told my assistant who was very busy and did not take my instruction fully on board. At the end of recess I realised the phone was still off the hook. On apologizing to the teacher she commented she hung up after her coffee got cold but I also think she got the message.
