HIT: PROGRAM FOR KIDS NEEDING SOMETHING EXTRA

Wanda's post about the book club reminded me about something I got
talked into this school year that was more successful than I had
imagined. Our Principal wanted a weekly multi-discipline activity for
those bright children who didn't qualify for or whose parents didn't
want them in the District G&T program. The Art Teacher,the Computer
Teacher and I set up and implemented the program.

It was centered around women artists. The students (second, third and
fourth graders selected by their teachers) came to the Computer Room or
Media Center and did research using print, CD ROM reference materials
and the Internet. We used the Big 6 Skills. Then the students used MS
Word to write a biography of the artist. In the Art Room they were shown
examples of their artist's work and did an art project (paintings and 3
dimentional sculptures) in that style.

The culmination of the activity was an assembly where each of the 30
children read their report and/ or explained the art work. The assembly
was only for grades 2nd-4th and was well received. You could have heard
a pin drop while the students were talking. The whole activity took
place in 6 weeks.

Needless to say we will do something similar again next school year.
