Netters - Maybe it's summer and seashores that has me focusing on this topic whenever school lets out. Once again I find myself with a summer planning project that involves the sea. At my K-4 school, the Special Area teachers (that includes Library-Media) run enrichment classes throughout the day every 6th day (we're on a 6 day rotation). We see each grade level for approx. 45 minutes and work as a team. In October (Columbus Day, etc.) we want to offer 3 sessions (for 3 separate enrichment days) that simulate life at sea or teach a particular maritime skill or form of recreation. Ideally the activities will emphasize collaboration and have kids working together (making decisions, singing, strategizing, etc.). I'm gravitating toward pirates, sea shanties, knot tying, etc., but things are still buzzing around in my brain. Has anyone done anything hands-on and concerning life at sea? Book suggestions would be great, but what I really need are actual activities and resources. T.I.A.
