Several years ago I heard a "Futurist" speak at a REMC meeting and he was speaking specifically to the teaching profession and asked the question--Why should a student sit and listen to a teacher lecturing on "facts" when he could have in his hands a computer the size of a paperback book that would have most of the data he needs? His lecture was something like "From Smart Toilets to Smart Schools" He talked about toilets that would check your urine daily(for diabetics, etc.) and even notifiy your physician with the output. His whole point was that we really have to look at what the role of the teacher is and that learning to process the information and do something with it is what we really need to be teaching. Gee, does that sound familiar? No wonder some people think we don't need library information specialists any more! :-) This is the first I have heard where there is actually something like he might have been talking about. I would be interested in hearing more about the cost. Will it have all genres available for those of us closet trashy romance readers? I'm trying to imagine the implications for the corrections environment where they are not allowed access to computers. Hopefully they won't stop printing books for a while yet!
