This strand about *requiring* a certain number of minutes per day to read is interesting. I wonder how many of us were *required* by our parents (or the band director) to practice a musical instrument a certain number of minutes per day? I have often felt that if reading practice were handled similarly, the same as practicing a sport or practicing music (either voice or instrument), that we would have better readers. I know numerous people who said they hated piano practice as a youngster, but they are grateful as adults that their parents made them stick to it because they enjoy being able to play now. I think that if our students want to stay in band in high school, they HAVE to practice so many minutes per day outside the school day. What's wrong with requiring reading practice? (Of course, I know that band is an elective and they know if they don't do the practice, they don't get to stay in band.)
