During the first ten years of my teaching career (Sophomore English), I noticed
that students complained that they never had time for homework. Yes, when
television programs came up, they all seemed to know all of the shows that had
been on the previous night. With some round-about questioning, I figured out
that "homework time" was usually during the news. If they couldn't get
homework done before prime time television, they "didn't have time" to finish!
Of course, they also usually ate dinner during that time as well. That didn't
leave a whole lot of time for doing homework -- much less reading without
interruption.
