collection dev. info. needed

I am going to start as a first year library media specialist next year.  I
would like to know about both elementary and high school library collection
developments.

I would like to know what are the most important things I should know about
collection development for my school.  Any advice???

Also, does anyone know of any web sites that would assist me in collection
development?
