The CHAT is back! LM_Chat that is. Thanks to Adam Rubin, we are up and chatting! New chatsite: chat.syr.edu Address replaces orb.syr.edu, but all the rest remains the same. Reminder: LM_NET and AASL announce the next LM_Conf online panel discussion: ELECTRONIC REFERENCE (This is part of LM_Live!, including LM_Chat) Marlene Woo-Lun, of Linworth Publications, has agreed to host our next LM_Conf, Wednesday June 10. She and Joyce Valenza have arranged for a panel of vendors to address issues relating to electronic reference. The conference will be held at 8 PM EST. A 20-30 minute panel discussion will be followed by a question and answer session. The panelists will be: EBSCO Alexander Marciante Stephen MacRae IAC Catherine Lowney Catherine_Lowney@iac.net UMI Josh Sanderson jsanderson@umi.com FACTS ON FILE NEWS SERVICES Ken Park Potential discussion topics: Full text: How much is enough? What can we expect over the next year? New features? Interface or scope changes? Pricing issues? Who pays for district/school-wide access? How are those prices determined? CD-ROM vs. Web access--Is CD-ROM dead? Is there still a place for print? Issues relating to archive: how many vendors are adding older materials? Is remote access an option in most products? Curriculum links? "Push" developments? Are there new partnerships among products to look for? Any news relating to cross-database searching? Are there any new products to announce? We hope that they will be joined by YOU, our members who will have a chance to join in with your questions, ideas and comments. In order to participate, you will need to download IRC Chat software. This is explained in detail at: http://chat.syr.edu/vcc/members/lm/ Login as a registered user, with the userid: lm the password is: live This will take you to the LM_Live page. Just follow the instructions given there to download and configure the software. (In the event that you are unable to download the software from there, look for the chat clients at http://shareware.com) Timeline and Schedule: Between now and the event, go to the LM_Live! website and download the appropriate software for chatting. Practice by entering the LM_Chat area and trying to chat with someone. If you are alone, try saying something to yourself. Please do NOT expect to be able to simply download and use your software to go right into the panel discussion. It requires a bit of time to configure, and also some practice. Here is what you will need to do, after you have your IRC chat software installed and configured. Using your IRC software, just go to the IRC LM_Live site, and enter the LM_Conf channel. The IRC LM_Live! site is at: chat.syr.edu port 6667 You will then need to go into the channel: LM_Conf, using the command: /join #lm_conf If you would like to read the transcripts of earlier test sessions, check out the LM_NET On the Web site!
