Barbara, (and all),

The technique of using an alias address isn't limited to AOL. (I
get spam with the 'friend@public.com' address). It is a feature
contained in modern email programs. I use a similar feature for large
distribution lists. That way I don't have every address showing in
the To: field. Also, long lists of addresses in a To: field tend to
break some email systems.

When I create a large distribution list in my email program
(Pegasus), I give it a unique name. I then use that name in the To:
field and in the From: field I use an alias name followed by my
email address. Actually you can use any correctly formatted address
there, it doesn't have to be real. The program uses the created list
to send the message and the recipients don't see anything but the
alias.

Actually, the listserver programs that run lists like LM_NET use a
similar feature. They call a file that contains the subscribers'
email addresses, but put the list name and address in the From: and
other fields.
