JOIN ALA IN GUADALAJARA!!!

XIIth Guadalajara International Book Fair
November 28 - December 6, 1998

Do you want to:
  * improve library service to your growing community of Spanish
speakers?
  * broaden your knowledge of Latin American authors?
  * develop multicultural programming in your library?
  * increase your cultural knowledge of Mexico?
  * network with other American librarians who are responsible for
Spanish language
     acquisitions and collection development?
  * find an easy way to purchase Spanish language materials?

If you answered *yes* to any of these questions, then your participation
in the world's most important exhibit of Spanish language publications is
required!

For the second year, ALA and the Guadalajara International Book Fair are
partnering to provide support for American librarians to attend the XIIth
Guadalajara International Book Fair (Feria Internacional del Libro -- FIL).
The  FREE PASS Program will provide 3 days lodging and registration at
the expense of FIL; and an ALA contribution of $100 toward the cost of
airfare1.  FREE PASSES will be awarded to up to 200 American librarians
who work in the area of Spanish language acquisitions and/or are
working to build their Spanish language collection to better serve their
community and users2.

FIL will offer:
* firsthand access to the latest publications in Spanish;
* an exhibit of more than 75,000 titles;
* access to the complete catalogs of more than 900 publishers from over
25 countries;
* networking opportunities with 8000 book professionals;
* literary programming with Latin American authors; and
* lectures on Mexican culture delivered by experts in the field.

The deadline for application to the FIL FREE PASS Program is August 17,
1998.

The FREE PASS Program is a joint collaboration between FIL and the ALA
International Relations Office (Tel: 1-800-280-3201; Fax:  312-280-3256;
E-mail:  intl@ala.org)

1.  Applicants to the FREE PASS Program must be individual members of
ALA and must use the ALA-designated travel agency to be eligible for the
$100 travel contribution.2.  ALA and FIL encourage applications from
school and public librarians, as well as academic librarians, to the FREE
PASS Program.   FIL will also provide free registration  to  all American
librarians interested in attending FIL, even if they are not selected for the
FREE PASS Program.
