I loved Gayle's list--I don't have ANY of those books, but
will try to get them for next year!

My favorite of this year:

The Paper Dragon, a literary folk tale in which a humble but
talented Chinese scroll painter battles wits with a dragon
to save his village from being destroyed. To answer the dragon's
riddles, the painter searches his own scrolls for paintings of
heroes and myths to find inspiration. These images help him
through the first two riddles. The last riddle, "Bring me
the strongest thing in the world, wrapped in paper" makes the
painter realize that love is the strongest thing in the world and
he paints his beloved village friends on the last scroll. Hope
this isn't terribly incoherent--makes me cry just to summarize
the story. My children loved it and yours will too.

Best,
