From owner-lm_net@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Fri Jun 26 18:30:Friends: Earlier this week (6/23/98) I offered an admitted "just off the top of my head" response to the question of whether it is reasonable to see the Internet as a legitimate replacement for libraries. My answer was rather wordy, and it must be conceded that many audiences will not sit still for such. A synthesized, edited version, designed as an "armor-piercing bullet," follows: Relying on the Internet to satisfy our information needs is as well considered as relying on TV to meet those same needs. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for (or you settle for "Whatever")... . The Internet is NOT an information superhighway. Rather, it is a wild and most certainly polluted river, from which we may choose (or be compelled) to drink. My (public) money is on state-of-the-art, professionally managed and maintained library media centers; information reservoirs whose media specialists' EXACT purpose and mission is to thoughtfully and responsibly share back a cleansed and purified information selection, for which these professionals know to hold themselves accountable, both in and for the public trust. Whatever. Party on! JEK ***** Failing to set reasoned limits means we leave ourselves pushing out our four walls, only to have the roof collapse on top of us. At the same time, failing to provide and use doors to permit ourselves to venture out and others to venture in, results in simple stasis--leaving us the equivalent of undiscovered, unappreciated geodes. While we all have expressed our sorrow to her, we'de like to do more (we're thinking of creating a scholarship fund). The mother is still coming to work every day. We're trying to treat her as normally as we had prior to this tragic news. However, let's face it, the next year is going to be heartbreaking. We don't want to do anything that will make things more difficult or akward. Has anyone on this caring list been in the same situation or know of someone who has? If so, could you kindly share any suggestions? When is the most appropriate time to set up a fund? Any books you can recommend for the mom & family as well as us? You may correspond directly to me if you prefer.
