The parent of a sixth grade student (who is also a teacher at our elementary school) is challenging the use of Catherine Called Birdy as a classroom novel. My understanding is that she is objecting to its use by all students in the class, due to objectionable language and sexual content, but is not at this point requesting its removal from the library. I believe that she is addressing the Board of Education on the matter this evening, but the principal did not want to escalate the issue by having the librarian present. (He is supportive of the library and will be a good advocate, I believe.) Do any of your teachers use this novel in their classrooms? If so, how is it used? Has there been any problem with it? Any advice or support would be appreciated!
