In reference to Barb Engvall's message about the craziness of San Francisco's public school board: Perhaps the board hasn't thought of simply adding titles to an existing reading list? It seems to me that deleting titles is reminiscent of Kristallnacht. Allowing students to read widely and form their own opinions of many writers' styles, ideas, characterizations, etc. would be the wisest course. The mark of a great writer is that everyone and anyone can, indeed, "see themselves" in the art. Underlying human goals and passions transcend the trendiness of current "multicultural diversity" programs. Add, don't subtract! Offer more choices, a broader spectrum. Librarians: beware the censor!
