We are a middle school in our second year of using Accelerated Reader. Last year teachers used the program as part of their students' grades (for example, 20% of the total reading grade). After a parent complaint about her child's grade, we were told by central office personnel that we could not use the program in this way. Teachers have been very upset and our AR participation is definitely down. We would like to know any ways AR is being used as part of a grade, and how we could win over administrators who are afraid of a parent complaint. Our 7th and 8th grade students are not impressed by a Reading Store, although our store gets raves over the prizes we have. They truly care about a grade, and that is how they use the program to its' fullest. Thanks for any suggestions.
