There is no official status for "Lift Every Voice and Sing." We like it
because of the lyrics and the beautiful music. While the
NAACP was the premier policy force for Blacks during the time it was
published, there have always been opposing organizations.

It may have been perceived as the NAACP's song because Johnson served as
field secretary and  executive secretary of the NAACP the early part
of the century .>
