ELEM: Book title needed

A volunteer parent is looking for a book her fourth grade teacher read to
her.  She said it was set in "pioneer days" and was about a girl whose
father (she thinks) was helping to clear land for the New York State
Thruway.  The only other thing she remembers vividly is that there was
something about gold beads.  I told her that the description rang no bells
for me, but perhaps it would for one of you--especially if you grew up in
New York state.  She would be thrilled (and impressed) if we could come up
with a title!  Thanks.
