historical fiction

w it all, but once again I've been foiled.

        A third grade teacher required students to read a non-fiction book
for this month.  A young lady read Little House on the Prairie because she
understood it to be autobiographical. It is in the library on the fiction
shelf.  She (and I) would really like to know what determines that
apparently fine distinction between autobiography and historical fiction.
Surely the story format is not the deciding factor.
