Thanks to all of you who sent me suggestions. Here are your recommendations. I will pass them on to the teacher who requested the information. 1. Mississippi Bridge by: Mildred D. Taylor 2. The Friendship by: Mildred D. Taylor 3. The Well by: Mildred D. Taylor 4. Jackson Jones And The Puddle Of Thorns by: Mary Quattlebaum 5. Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World by: Mildred Pitts Walter Bill Brittain: _All the Money in the World_ Eloise Greenfield: _Nathaniel Talking_ Any other books that any other grade 2-4 boys like. Justin and the Best Biscuits in the Workd by Mildred Pitts Walter Stealing Home by Mary Stolz Jackson Jones and the Puddle of Thorns by Mary Quattlebaum How about taking a look at Candy Dawson Boyd? Her books may tend toward 4th--5th grade but they are worth looking at. Have you seen the Mercer Mayer chapter books about LC, a more grown up Little Critter? They appeal to all 2-3 graders. ~ Eloise Greenfield Lucille Clifton Luke Was There by Eleanor Clymer -- Sharon Draper has a small series of books about a group of Afro-American boys. I think one of the titles was "Lost in the Tunnel of Time." They are more 4th grade level (I think). These are good books that qualify: Quattlebaum. Jackson Jones and the puddle of thorns. Mead. Junebug. Hi. Osmond Molarsky's books have groups of kids in them--a multi-cultural mix. The newer Matt Christopher books (which are short chapter books) have minority characters in them. Peters' The Stinky Sneakers Contest have African-Americans protaganists. Wagner's J.T. is another; J. Merrill The Toothpaste Millionaire is another. Black snowman by Phil Mendez (Scholastic) Go fish by Mary Stolz (HarperCollins) Goggles by Ezra Jack Keats (Macmillan) Ezra Jack Keats Books Max found two sticks by Brian Pinkny (Simon & Schuster) Pink and Say by Patricia Polacco (Philomel) Snow on snow on snow by Cheryl Chapman (Dial) Well: David's story by Mildred Taylor (Dial) William and the good old days by Eloise Greefield (HarperCollins) Willie Jerome by Alice Faye Duncan (Macmillan) You might want to try the websites below, from the November weed of the Month web pages, both are excellent! AFROPHILE contains recommended titles that are divided by grade level and have brief summaries. http://www.sas.upenn.edu/African_Studies/Proceedings_Rev/men_afrophle.html Africa Access Review is another very extensive site created by Brenda Randolph of Parkland Middle School in Rockville, MD with reviews of materials for children on the topic of Africa. The site is searchable and contains hundreds of reviews. http://www.inform.umd.edu/mdk-12/homepers/africa/ -- Janet Rawdon Lincoln-Eliot Library Newton MA jrawdon@mec.mass.edu ^ Janet Rawdon Lincoln-Eliot School Newton MA jrawdon@meol.mass.edu =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= To quit LM_NET (or set NOMAIL or DIGEST), Send an email message to listserv@listserv.syr.edu In the message write EITHER: 1) SIGNOFF LM_NET 2) SET LM_NET NOMAIL or 3) SET LM_NET DIGEST * NOTE: Please allow time for confirmation from Listserv.
