What a wonderful idea -- to create a committee that addresses human needs. I believe that if "hi tech" is to be all that it can be-- be have to become more "high touch" developing more humane practice with each increase in technological sophistication. I will be interested in the discussion that follows....about how best to do this. As the discussion turns to prevention--I think it is time that we become school communities---that means being deeply involved with parents in the raising of their children. When I got my M.ed. there was a lot of discussion about why schools couldn't do this.....at the time I thought, then who will? Ultimately--we may need to rethink how we do schools. One school I work with has 760 students....far too many to relate to in an ongoing way--perhaps we will need to create small schools within the large ones...where students and their families become part of our family....where we live our lives with them...learning together what it really means to be human. All the programs that exist to teach character do no good if the children and parents know us well enough to see examples of those traits we mouth so easily...in us. Leaning that honesty is good does not translate to living that honesty is good..... -- Karen McIntyre, Librarian In times of change learners inherit the earth kjmcinty@tenet.edu while the learned find themselves beautifully Ramirez & Guadalupe Elm. equipped to deal with a world that no longer Lubbock, TX exists.
