Okay, I defer to the W'95 experts again. I sponsor the school paper (printed quarterly). My club of fifteen reporters/editors/writers put together our articles on various computers around the building. When they are finished, they send for the disk that holds our newspaper, and simply add in their article to the current edition. We have used Microsoft Office 97 for our WP program, and up until now it has worked nicely. Yesterday, after saving a final segment of the paper, i closed it. At the end of the day, I decided to go ahead a print a hard copy to edit the old fashion way during a newspaper meeting this A.M. When I tried to open it, I kept getting a strange error message, something to the effect of ..."you must click on open, or your file must have a .doc extension." Well folks, it did have the right extension, and no matter how many ways I tried to open it, I could not. The students claim they saved it just like they always have. All other editions open just fine! The only one that won't open is the one I NEED! This was extremely frustrating, because tomorrow is publishing day! All we had left to do was add in our pictures and boxes, and well, format here and there. I never add the pictures until last because some of them I don't care to save on the file, so it was just plain text. (Also I am not a picture buff, but I do know they take up a good chunk of memory, and I want my paper on a disk, not several--and no, I'm still in the fog about zip, and quite frankly, at this time, could care less.) I got so hooked on saving it on the computer, and merely having a disk instead, that I threw away written out stuff as it was added to the disk, and guess what---no back up copy. I guess I learned the lesson the hard way! If only this were April Fool's Day and this was a terribly funny joke. My newspaper club wants to have a burial service tomorrow for the disk, and I sort of in a sick way wish it would go to you know where. I remember recently someone requesting to see other school newspapers published on school web pages. Mine last edition is there, if you'd like to see it.
