The question came up in the faculty room and none of my encyclopedias had an answer. I looked up history of paper makeing, printing, and typerwriters. No luck. Called the reference desk of our public library. Lot's of support, no answer. Called two paper distributors, no luck. We did find out that there is a "standard" size sheet of paper made that, when cut into eighths, measures 8 1/2 by 11. Does anyone know this answer? We are stumped!
