Why is standard paper size 8 1/2" by 11" ? The question came up in the
faculty room and none of my encyclopedias had an answer. I looked up
history of paper makeing, printing, and typerwriters. No luck. Called
the reference desk of our public library. Lot's of support, no answer.
Called two paper distributors, no luck. We did find out that there is a
"standard" size sheet of paper made that, when cut into eighths,
measures 8 1/2 by 11.
Does anyone know this answer? We are stumped! TIA
Donna
