Years ago I worked in the business supply section of a large office supply
company. We were told that a ream was actually 500 sheets of 17 x 22,
which was then cut in fourths to produce the 11 x 8 1/2" size we recognize
as standard business size.

A couple of associated thoughts:
1. Don't you dislike having to cope with the 8 x 10 1/2" paper. Where
does it come from, and why is that size made?

2. Have you ever gotten a xerox from England? They seem to be a 1/2"
longer. Is their standard 11 1/2 x 8 1/2"?
