target: elem.: book markers

My present library uses paint stirers as markers students can use
while browsing the shelves for books to check out.  They slike the
stick in where they take out the book and then if they don't want it,
they reselve the book in the proper place.  However, sticks and
elementary boys don't always mesh.  Anyone else use anything to mark
the shelves?
