Hi Everyone, I have read the postings in the archives about the computer labs vs. Library Media Centers and I have several questions relating to this topic. I hope that you will take a few minutes to share your experiences with me. My school district is writing a long range tech plan that will finally provide 3 or 4 computers in all the classrooms and new computers in the labs. There is already a discussion about staffing the labs with full-time Teacher Aides and the LMS are very concerned about aides providing instruction. Also, the classrooms and labs will eventually be able to access the Internet, the Library's OPAC and they will have access to such programs as SIRS Discoverer and Newsbank (currently available only in the LMCs). The LMCs have been automated for several years, and we all have Internet access. The Elementary LMCs have at least 10 computers and at the secondary levels at least 25 computers. Many of the Elementary Libraries also have flexible scheduling. My questions are for schools that already have all this technology in the classrooms and labs: 1. Are you seeing more classes/students in the LMCs or are teachers taking students to the computer labs for research? 2. Are you seeing more teacher/librarian collaboration or are teachers bypassing you completely? 3. In the labs, who is teaching informational retrieval skills? 4. Has your library budget and/or staff been cut, to help implement the technology in the classrooms and labs? 5. Are there any other concerns, you would like to share. I am looking for responses from all grade levels (K-12). Thanks so much for all your help.
