Target: This year in History

I have a teacher who is looking for information about previous years
(i.e. how much was gas, a movie, major news stories, etc..).  I know
someone recently posted a hit about the specific day in history, but I
am looking for the year in review. Any good Internet sites would be
appreciated. I've already looked at that hit and searched on 6-7 search
engines.  TIA
