I also found some of the suggestions for internet supervision to be
unreasonable for high school students.  We allow students to browse the
internet during their free time and of course they go to find sites that
interest them..World Wrestling Federation, cars, dirtbikes, song lyrics,
etc..my feeling is that in searching for material that interests them they
are teaching themselves how to be information literate as opposed to mearly
computer literate.  When an assignment comes along they will know how to
search the internet.  We include a page in the student handbook that covers
our basic internet rules.  Students and parents must sign that they have
received and are willing to comply with the rules and guides in the
handbook.  Also as a personal opinion, standing behind someone and reading
their computer screen is as rude as reading printed material over their
shoulder...a quick look at the page graphics can tell you all you need to
know about where the student is on the Internet.
