Greetings All, There once was a techie named Vinnie Whose intranet drove him to Dalwynnie He posed a question to LM_Net and what answers did he get? Here's the HIT: now he's no longer spinnie Regarding Intranets: A link from the school's web page, if the schools page is only accessible internally, would be good. You may run a seperate page for internal people than for outside users(?). The inranet term came about as an internet that is internal ... you are still "internetworking" which was the origination. The advantage is that many intranets are not accessible from outside, theu you can have information on them which is not appopriate to the general public. For example, on my employer's intranet, I can look up employee phone numbers and email addresses. On our Internet site, all I can get is a few addresses we want to be public. Internally, there are forms and technical data available .... etc, etc. Our corporate folks have an intranet server on a NT server; I wanted to have some technical info available, and run a simple, and apparently very good, server in my office ... they are easy to setup. Not knowing your level of expertise, nor whether for Linux, Win9x, WinNT, or Mac platforms, I cannot offer too much, but will mention that the freeware product of Imatix (they spell the server as theri name backwards xitami) is slick ... You can actually create the server totally on the standalone, and access it from itself (sounds strange, but its not) to see how things work. Links can go to a directory ... excuse me, they now call those folders, I believe. <vbg> (techy husband of a WONDERFUL media specialist) (member of LM_NET Hospitality Committee, technical team) Win31/95, Netscape, Pegasus Mail George W. Bynum Electro-Hydraulic Engineering Support Cross Fluid Power Greenville, SC gbynum@crossco.com I'm at a Dept. of Defense site not a school so take this for what it's worth to you. I think the idea of the Intranet is an internal resource for members of your organization. Our set up may be a little complex for what you are doing but here is a brief description. Hope it helps. Internet site on the WWW - free access to anyone. Contains only information that would be appropriate to a wide range of users and would not cause harm or embarrassment to our organization. Intranet site on another server - access limited to members of our organization plus selected other organizations/individuals that work closely with us. Contains information that is proprietary or of no use to the general public but not sensitive (in your case this may contain some school specific data). Extranet site on a local server - access limited to members of our organization at our local facility. Contains sensitive information that would not normally be released to people outside of the organization (in your case this might include things like attendance information, limited access material or personal data on staff or students). Different departments have their own areas in the site that they do with what they want. They build and manage their own websites including links to material on the local network, links to sites on the internet and locally stored online documents and databases. The webmaster has a search built that looks only at the intranet pages - that would also work for you to limit to some degree the exposure of your students to the WWW until they have some experience with search and evaluation of sources. I'm not sure how a search would work for sites that were linked to from your local network rather than actually located on the local network.
