NEWS For Immediate Release October 30, 1998 Contact: Steven Hofmann 312-280-4389 shofmann@ala.org AASL announces new online resource The American Association of School Librarian (AASL) has launched a new online resource for school library media specialists, teachers, and building and district level administrators. The Learning Through the Library web pages identify and disseminate information about: * successful K-12 teaching-learning practices involving school library media centers; * summaries of research studies and papers related to improving information literacy and general literacy instruction through school library media centers; * and web sites focusing on programs, standards, issues, and studies dealing with instructional improvement in schools. The Learning Through the Library web pages are accessible from the AASL home page at <http://www.ala.org/aasl>, or can be reached directly at <http://www.ala.org/aasl/learning>. The Learning Through the Library web pages are a product of AASL's Learning Through the Library Task Force (1996-98), which was charged with developing strategies for supporting AASL members' efforts to focus on learning and to enhance student achievement. Task force chair Violet Harada, University of Hawaii (Honolulu), and A. James Jones, Milton Hershey School (Hershey, Pennsylvania), coordinated the creation of the web pages and will continue to maintain the content. In addition to Harada and Jones, members of the task force were Debbie Abilock, Nueva Learning Center (Hillsborough, California); Carolyn Cain (Verona, Wisconsin); Sharon Coatney, Oak Hill School (Overland Park, Kansas); Bill Derry, Gateway Center (New Haven, Connecticut); Mike Eisenberg, Syracuse (New York) University; Carol Fox, May Watts Elementary (Naperville, Illinois); Mark Gordon, school library & school reform consultant (Santa Cruz, California); Carol Kroll, Nassau School Library System (Greenvale, New York); Carol Kulthau, Rutgers University (New Brunswick, New Jersey); Vivian Melton, Cleveland (Ohio) Public Schools; Carol Nelson, Eau Claire (Wisconsin) Public Schools; Donna Peterson, Lincoln (Nebraska) Public Schools; Denise Rehmke, West High School (Iowa City, Iowa); and Sheila Salmon, New Visions for Public Schools (New York, New York).
