Novels for first grade

I have been asked to come up with the names of several "novels" that can be
used by entire classes of first grade students for the following thematic
units.  The teacher requested books on about a second grade level, but when
she showed me what type of books she was looking for, they were definitely
controlled vocabulary/easy reader types.  The units are as follows:
Shelters
Planets
Rules in Society
Tools/Machines
Exploring New Lands
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. ASAP of course.  TIA.
