I think I predate most of you since I was born in 1938. My sister and I spent some summers with an aunt in the country and her meager library had "Maida's little house" , store, etc. A little crippled rich girl who became friends with the neighbor children and had marvelous adventures and of course became strong through their efforts. I wanted adventure and read mostly books with boy main characters - no girls with excitement then except Nancy Drew and even she was not as exciting as the Hardy boys. But for adventure you could not beat Howard Pease and Armstrong Sperry. And I read all the James Fenimore Cooper books. I don't think I really was exposed to the real classics till I discovered Children's Literature as my first course in Library Science after I switched to it from a Math minor. Calculus is why I became a librarian!
