GEN: Children's or picture book to accompany secondary thematic

You were so fantastic in my previous request for titles to accompany a 9th
grade "Coming of Age" thematic study that I am returning to you with an
additional request.  We have decided to use the following novels in our
thematic study of leaving home, learning about self, returning home to find
things don't turn out as expected:  Warriors Don't Cry (base young adult
text); Great Expectations (classic text), with the following additional
novels: A Fine White Dust, Dogsong, The Brave.   We would like to introduce
the unit with a children's or picture book.  What suggestions would you
make?
