During vacation got time to read a recent Alice Walker book -- "By the Light of My Father's Smile" -- not sure I recommend it yet, still reading. But I loved this nugget: (not sure if it's based on any research) One character explains to the other the origin of the phrase "Ladies first." Seems that they use to walk behind men as a gesture of subservience. But too many of them ran away. So -- in order to keep an eye on them, .... Oh, the treasures we find in books......
