So many of you requested more information on our color coding system that I
decided to post to the list. First a little background information. We
still shelve the books in alpha order by first letter. Above each section
we have the letter as well as the correct "dot". We also have posted on the
end of each shelf a "converter chart" i.e. A red dot, B yellow dot, etc.
This is the third library I have been involved in where we have done this,
and I finally got smart. I use the single big dots on the largest sections,
and save the bullseyes (big dot with little dot on top of it) on the smaller
sections. This saves time as well as supplies. When new books come in to
be processed, I put the color dot on them instead of the usual spine label.
I also cover them with a piece of book tape, as I do all stickers I put on
books. All cataloging in the computer and card catalog remains as usual.
Now for the chart. Here is the color scheme we use. I got the dots from
Demco. Large dots come in red, yellow, purple, orange, pink, light blue,
green and dark blue. Small dots are irridescent in pink, orange, green and
yellow. Bullseyes are made by placing a small dot in the center of a large
dot.

A-red; B-large yellow; C-small pink; D-purple; E-small orange; F-light blue;
G-small green; H- large orange; IJ-large green with pink bullseye; K-large
yellow with pink bullseye; L-dark blue with yellow bullseye; M-large pink;
NO-red with yellow bullseye; P-large orange with yellow bullseye; QR-purple
with yellow bullseye; S-large green; T-light blue with orange bullseye;
UV-pink with yellow bullseye; W-dark blue; XYZ-orange with pink bullseye.

I also have three sub sections that I shelve right next to the main section.
  We have so many Arthur and Dr. Seuss books that I have made each of them a
special section by putting a small dot on the yellow (Arthur) and green
(Seuss) big dots. I have also made a special section of Disney books. You
know, they all look alike, but the stories are actually by different people,
that nobody knows. I put them in a special section after the "D's".

I know some of you won't think this is a good system, but it works well for
me. Good luck to those of you who try it. Modify it to meet your needs.
