People seem to be exploring all angles of this tragic event so here's
my observation on the events. All the shootings in the past years have
not been at intown urban schools that most felt were at risk. The
students involved, especially in Colorado, have been suburban kids from
middle class backgrounds. Has anyone though to blame this on suburban
living where there is no sense of community. I feel accross the
country people, because of a fear of intown living have moved to these
empty enclaves where neighboors are strangers and road rage is just a
part of life. Suburbs and exurban areas are places were residents fear
anyone different from themselves. In addition, middle class americans
are fed a diet of fear by the media. Americans can no longer tell the
difference between what is real and what is created by the media.
The suburbs have also created a autocentric society. Without cars
these two killers wouldhave had a much harder time geting bombs and
guns to school. The driving age needs to be raised to 18. Sex, drugs
and drinking can all be traced to teen access to cars.
In addition the two killers in Littleton were not outcasts by any
means. They had their one little clique, they had friends, they went
to the prom. They were just believing they were outcast as created by
the media.
In the end these problems begin in the home. Parents should be
aware of what media, be it the Internet, TV or games and access to cars
are doing to their children.
